CHAPTER 5
River Tenley
âPlease, please, I swear I donât know anything! I swear on my life! Please!â
I cleared my throat and lifted my gun. âThen youâre no good to us, are you?â I pulled the trigger.
Crew Finlay
Mercierâs groan when he collapsed on the bed was on the obscene side, just saying.
I finished cuffing his right wrist to the metal frame of the bed, making sure he couldnât get anywhereâunless he wanted to skip off with the whole bedâbefore I rose to my feet.
âIâll be back with dinner in a bit.â I gave him another glance, then headed to the kitchen.
It felt so wrong to restrain him again after the two or three hours weâd just shared outside. I just didnât view him as a flight risk anymore. In between dips in the lake and taking it easy on the blanket, carefully rotating and stretching his muscles, heâd been fairly chatty after all. Heâd been wistful when heâd spoken about his son, a boy who had nestled himself into Mercierâs heart faster than he cared to admit, in his own words. It was the boyâs second summer going to space camp, and Mercier didnât like heâd missed his sonâs weekly call home.
That had led to my asking what itâd been like to work undercover for so long while Jack had been with his grandfather. Torture, in short, Mercier had said. And the job had ended so abruptly when Carillo had been arrested and put through a very swift trial last year.
At first, Mercier had been furious. All his work had gone to wasteâwhich wasnât true, of course. Theyâd had enough evidence to put three other cartel-affiliated men behind bars, but I understood his frustration. You didnât go undercover on and off for four years to bring down the middlemen who were so easily replaced.
In those years, Mercier had seen his son about half the time. Two weeks out of four.
I couldnât imagine.
This past year had put things in a new perspective for him. Heâd reprioritized and realized no case was worth obsessing over. There would always be a cartel boss to take down, but he only had one son.
Then heâd been reinstated when theyâd learned Carillo had escaped from prison.
Reinstated into the field, that was. The case had obviously remained active and open, apparently with two focuses: find another way in for Rafael Delgado, and to get two other agents involved. Because Mercier was thinking about retiring. After patching up his relationship with Jack, Adrien wanted to take the back seat at work.
Iâd asked if he had those other two agents waiting somewhere, but heâd said they werenât ready yet. So he was going to do his absolute best to get closer to Luca Blanco and bring him down once and for all, and then walk away for good.
At least, thatâd been the plan up until Ryan and I had kidnapped him.
Once the pasta was cookinâ, I put on a pair of jeans. My boxer briefs had dried, and I didnât like walking around completely unprotected.
